Trudeau crisis pregnancy centre legislation

RIGHTNOW CALLS FOR TRUDEAU TO STOP ATTACKING CHARITIES THAT HELP PREGNANT WOMEN

Canadian pro-life group says the attacks on pregnant women by the Prime Minister must end.

OTTAWA, ON (October 30, 2024) – In response to an announcement made by the Liberal government requiring crisis pregnancy centres to advertise they do not refer for abortions, political pro-life organization RightNow is calling on the Trudeau government to stop their ongoing attacks on charities with ideological differences.

Both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland made announcements on Tuesday that a government bill requiring crisis pregnancy centres to disclose they do not commit or refer for abortions- or risk losing their charitable status- was forthcoming. A backgrounder posted on the Government of Canada website claimed, “anti-choice organizations are restricting the rights of vulnerable pregnant women to choose the reproductive care appropriate to them and their circumstances.”

According to Pregnancy Care Canada however, in the last 24 years, 190,741 women and men accessed help at Pregnancy Care Canada-affiliated pregnancy centres. There have been 188,158 client visits for material supplies such as diapers, formula and baby clothing. 18,879 clients have been helped through prenatal education and 33,000 clients have been helped through parenting programs. Not only that, but 10,470 women requested and received support after their abortions.

“Prime Minister Trudeau has made it his mission to attack charities with whom he has personal ideological differences,” said Alissa Golob, co-founder of RightNow, a non-profit organization committed to increasing voter intensity on life issues. “First the Liberals try to remove the charitable status of summer camps and homeless shelters unless they state they are in favour of abortion, and now they’re once again going after charities by threatening to remove their charitable status for centres giving pregnant women-in-need baby supplies”.

RightNow Co-founder Scott Hayward thinks such a bill would create more problems and inconsistencies for the Trudeau government. “Since this legislation would require a registered charity to advertise the activities that they do not engage in, will other charities be held to the same standard?,” he said. “For example, will the David Suzuki Foundation be required to advertise that they don’t drill for oil?”, he questioned.

“The Liberal government is single-handedly ensuring women have less choice in Canada”, said Golob. "When facing an unplanned pregnancy, women must have more choices than abortion. Crisis pregnancy centres provide women with these alternatives."

RightNow is calling on the government to stop the attacks on pro-life charities and ensure women are provided with more choices than just abortion options in Canada.
