Canada is the only democracy in the world without a law on abortion.
We, the undersigned residents of Canada draw the attention of the House to the following:
Whereas, the majority decision of Morgentaler v. The Queen [1988] asked Parliament to create a law regulating the procurement of an abortion in Canada;
Whereas, there currently exists no law for the procurement of an abortion in Canada
Whereas,
In the United States, abortion is restricted after 20 weeks in 18 states.
In the United Kingdom, abortion is restricted after 24 weeks.
In France, abortion is restricted after 12 weeks, unless approved by two physicians for the health and life of the mother.
In Sweden, abortion is restricted after 18 weeks, unless a written petition is made to the National Board of Health and Welfare.
In Germany, abortion is restricted after 12 weeks and must be accompanied with counselling.
Therefore, we, the undersigned petitioners, call upon Parliament to:
Legally restrict the procurement of an abortion to no more than 24 weeks gestation, that is, after the second trimester of the pregnancy.
